Treating Diabetes with Diet and Exercise. Recently, I was reading some of the readers’ postings on this Web site. Some of these postings expressed fairly strong opinions about how one should best manage his or her diabetes. Of course, one of the many good things about living in the United States is our right to freedom of speech, and postings such as these certainly get people thinking. However, it’s all too common for misconceptions about diabetes to abound. Whether it’s the belief that eating sugar causes diabetes, or that starting on insulin can make you go blind, or that having to start taking diabetes pills or insulin means that you’re a “bad diabetic,” as a dietitian and diabetes educator, I feel compelled to set the record straight whenever I can. So, what’s the best way to control diabetes? When it comes to Type 1 diabetes, which accounts for 5% to 1. A person with Type 1 diabetes must take insulin to survive. His pancreas has—to put it simply—”pooped out,” meaning that it no longer makes enough insulin. Of course, a person with Type 1 diabetes has choices as to how he takes insulin. The choices nowadays range from the traditional vial and syringe to an insulin pen to an insulin pump to an inhaler. The future holds more possibilities for insulin delivery as well. People with Type 1 diabetes must still incorporate meal planning and physical activity into their daily management. About 9. 0% to 9. Type 2. But Type 2 diabetes is a little less clear- cut in terms of how it’s best managed. The reason is that Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition. When someone is first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the cornerstones of management are often, initially, what many health- care professionals term “diet and exercise,” or, more appropriately, “lifestyle changes.” In other words, a person in the early stages of Type 2 diabetes may be able to control his blood glucose levels nicely by following a carbohydrate- and calorie- controlled meal plan, losing some weight (if necessary), and fitting regular physical activity into his or her schedule. At this stage of the game, the body is still making enough insulin, and healthy eating and activity help the body use its own insulin quite efficiently. At this point, a person with Type 2 diabetes will likely need to start taking medicine in addition to continuing with those healthy lifestyle changes. Medicine is usually in the form of one or more diabetes pills. Many people with Type 2 eventually go on to require insulin. The truth is that their pancreases have failed them. Man when I was first diagnosed with Type 2 I was well into the disease and was put on Metformin. At first I did real well I exercised at least 30 minutes 5-7 days a. The 2-Day Diet (2013) is a diet book in some ways similar to recently popular intermittent fasting books. It calls for a restricted diet for 2 days a week, and a low. If you’re looking to place the blame on someone, look to your family tree. Genetics plays a big factor in who gets Type 2 diabetes and who doesn’t. No one is to blame, nor is eating that piece of cheesecake or failing to take a walk after supper. There’s evidence that incorporating healthy lifestyle behaviors may stave off the need to take medicine or insulin for a while, and it’s important for people with Type 2 diabetes to work with their health- care teams on these behaviors.
But the bottom line is that Type 2 diabetes will eventually take its course. Family, friends, and coworkers can best help the person with Type 2 diabetes by being supportive and encouraging instead of being hurtful or disparaging. Many people are confused about the different kinds of sugar and sweeteners available today, and whether they are healthy and safe. Here is the lowdown on 25 different. Although the study was conducted by the reputable- sounding Academy of General Dentistry and published in the journal General Dentistry, even a perfunctory glance at this paper would force the reader to assume that the soda corporations forgot to pay their protection money to the Colgate Mafia. The Study Used a Sample Size of Three. Yup, the study used all of three individuals. We don't have to tell you that having a sample size of three is fundamentally wrong on more levels than the Dark Tower has floors. Quite a bit of math goes into determining the perfect sample size for the scope of a study. And generally, the consensus is that when conducting a study proving that common soft drinks are as dentally apocalyptic as crystal meth, having fewer participants than you have fingers on your hands is like publishing a paper concluding that all movies are about haunted cookies voiced by Gary Busey because the only film you included in your data was the 2. In the Land of Oz: The Latest Attack on Coconut Oil. Read this in. Nederlands. Read this article in : Dutch. As health- seekers in the know are increasingly consuming butter, lard, tallow and coconut oil, they should expect to see attacks on traditional fats in the media and in the scientific journals. Mehmet Oz and his co- author Dr. Mike Roizen in a blistering article entitled . Oz is an American cardiothoracic surgeon and prolific author of popular books on diet and health. He became famous for his frequent appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show and will be launching a daily talk show called Dr. Sorghum /Jowar / Milo (Sorghum vulgare) Sorghum is similar to maize in chemical composition. They have higher protein and low fat than maize. So ubiquitous is the bagel that you might not think of it as a food that will age you. But a bagel is a veritable carb bomb: The body converts refined carbohydrates. Oz in the fall of 2. While his views have been described as . In a recent interview, for example, he blames foods full of saturated fats, . While the writings of Roizen and Oz mention trans fats in passing, their gunsights are focused on the innocent bystander, saturated fats. Demonizing Saturated Fats. Coconut oil, says Dr. But the buzz on the street is that it. In these pages we have supplied numerous references to support this statement. One in particular is the 1. International Atherosclerosis Project, in which over 2. Investigators found the same degree of atheroma (artery clogs) in all parts of the world. Saturated fats in general enhance the immune system,3 and coconut oil in particular increases body temperature and is preferentially used by the body for energy rather than storage. The claim about benefits to blood pressure is not one that I have ever made, and as far as I know, there are no human studies that have looked at the effect of coconut oil on blood pressure. Coconut Oil and Aging. Dr. Oz also claims that all saturated fats cause aging . They tell your body to churn out inflammatory proteins that cause heart disease, stroke, wrinkles, impotence and immune system slip- ups. Those on the saturated fat diet commited more memory errors and showed signs of inflammation in certain areas of the brain. It is important to explain why so many animal studies get negative results for coconut oil. The coconut oil used in laboratory studies is usually fully hydrogenated coconut oil. The process of full hydrogenation gets rid of all the unsaturated fatty acids in coconut oil. Researchers began using fully hydrogenated coconut oil to study the effects of essential fatty acid deficiency. The poor results obtained in these studies. It is extremely deceitful for commentators to blame coconut oil in studies such as these. This will speed up the onset of EFA deficiency if the diet is devoid of EFA. It decreases a chemical known as brain- derived neurotrophic factor . However, lowering of BDNF does not always lead to depressive effects. It would appear that BDNF has depressive effects in some parts of the brain and anti- depressive effects in others. It would indeed be strange if saturated fats depressed brain function since the brain contains more saturated fat than almost any other organ in the body. The Amazing Story of Mr. Newport. What is not strange is the fact that Dr. Mary Newport, a neonatologist and medical director of the newborn intensive care unit at Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Florida. About six years ago, her husband, an accountant who worked at home, began struggling with daily tasks. His deterioration progressed and he was eventually diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer. Newport searched the Internet for clinical drug trials that would accept her husband and discovered that a drug containing medium- chain triglycerides, the kind of fat in coconut oil, had achieved remarkable results. Within a week he showed tremendous improvement and five months later her husband was leading a relatively normal life, although still unable to resume his work as an accountant, apparently due to permanent brain damage. One important test for Alzheimer. The illustration above shows Mr. Several researchers have been looking into the therapeutic use of high- fat ketonic diets in the treatment of disease. Veech of the (National Institutes of Health) NIH, and others, published an article entitled, . With insulin resistance, ketone bodies derived from coconut oil appear to protect neurons when glucose is not available. Researchers are now looking into the exciting possibility of using coconut oil as a treatment not only for Alzheimer. Ketone bodies may help the brain recover after a loss of oxygen in newborns through adults. Children with drug resistant epilepsy sometimes respond to an extremely low- carbohydrate ketogenic diet. Industry Damage Control. The attack by Dr. Roizen amounts to clever industry damage control. Imagine the loss of income to the pharmaceutical and food industries should the American public learn about the amazing benefits of coconut oil for the brain. Coconut oil holds potential in the treatment of cancer as well, as several studies have indicated coconut oil. The attack on coconut oil is not grounded in good science but in the agenda of the food industry. REFERENCEShttp: //longevity. General Findings of the International Atherosclerosis Project. According to Dr. These plant oils have many of the same qualities that made trans fats so good at preserving the shelf life and flavor of processed foods. So naturally, the food industry (not to mention the diet book industry) would like us to think they. Food manufacturers used tropical oils like coconut oil before the trans fats came on the scene. The vegetable oil industry then embarked on a long campaign of demonizing their competition, namely natural saturated fats like butter, tallow and coconut oil. With the recent revelations about the dangers of trans fats, food manufacturers are simply returning to the fats they used to use. Does Saturted Fat Cause Aging and Impair Memory?–What the Studies Really Say. By Chris Masterjohn. According to Dr. It does this by turning on a potentially harmful family of genes that we docs call RAS genes. They tell your body to churn out inflammatory proteins that cause heart disease, stroke, wrinkles, impotence and immune system slip- ups. Similar associations were noted for saturated fat and carbohydrate but they were not statistically significant. The most recent study on the subject followed more than 1. Those with higher linoleic acid intakes, however, had a higher risk of cancer if mutated RAS genes were their only genetic risk factor. These studies clearly implicated polyunsatuturated fats rather than saturated fats. Regarding claims that saturated fat impairs memory, there are three studies claiming to show that a . Lard contains about ten percent of its fat as polyunsaturated fatty acids, which promote oxidative stress,h,i and the rest as a balance of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. Sucrose itself contributes to oxidative stress. The most recent study showing that a lard- sucrose diet reduces BDNF levels found that additional vitamin E could normalize these levels (3), suggesting that the diet reduces them by promoting oxidative stress and thus that it is the polyunsaturated fat and sucrose in the diets rather than the saturated fat that are responsible for the problem. A recent study purportedly showed that . Most of the calories came from casein, sucrose, and corn starch for all the rats. Half of the rats were given 1. It has been known since 1. The results of this study were most likely due to essential fatty acid deficiency rather than saturated fat. In order to show a destructive effect of saturated fat itself, the researchers should have provided the minimum EFA requirement in both diets. Cutting Down on Sugar Might Be the Best Health Insurance. By Dr. Mercola. Author and educator Gary Taubes is among a small group of health investigators who have been relentlessly spreading the word about the strong associations between sugar consumption and the rising rates of obesity and major diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. All of these topics are also covered in this featured lecture. How Much Sugar Do You Eat Each Day? You don't really have this problem when you're cooking from scratch with whole foods, which are packed with natural flavors. Then all you need is seasoning. Most Americans Consume FAR Too Much Sugar. According to a 2. Americans consume 2. Most adults (7. 1. The ramifications of this are significant. That means at least 1. U. S. I prefer not to damage my mitochondria with a dirty fuel like glucose. Sugar Recommendations. The American Heart Association and the World Health Organization recommend limiting your daily addedsugar intake to 9 teaspoons (3. The limits for children range from 3 to 6 teaspoons (1. This is more than three times the recommended amount, and the evidence clearly indicates that this dietary trend goes hand in hand with our current epidemics of obesity and chronic disease. Sugar Feeds Disease. As noted in Taubes’ lecture, “sugar” includes both sucrose (table sugar) and fructose in the form of high fructose corn syrup or HFCS. For the first time in history, obese people now outnumber those who are underweight,3,4,5,6 and half of adult Americans have either full blown diabetes or prediabetes. Or else they’d have made some significant changes to their recommendations once it became clear that prevalence kept going up despite their best efforts at educating people about how to eat “right.” The truth is conventional diet recommendations have provoked these epidemics. This is entirely false, and low- fat recommendations have likely ruined a significant number of lives over the past few decades. To correct this metabolic imbalance, you ideally need to restrict net carbs to under 5. The Metabolic Impact of Sugar. All foods have metabolic and hormonal effects, but they’re not identical. Carbs are processed differently and produce different results compared to proteins and fats, for example. Different types of carbohydrates are also processed differently. Robert Lustig, a neuroendocrinologist who has done extensive research on the role of sugar in your body, your liver can safely metabolize only about 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day. As noted by Taubes, the conventional view is that there are no bad foods, only bad behavior. Lustig introduced the concept of fructose being . Different nutrients provoke different hormonal responses, and those hormonal responses determine, among other things, how much fat you accumulate. Because it’s metabolized in your liver, which has a limited capacity to process it, fructose tends to pack on the most pounds the fastest. Pre- Diabetes Versus Diabetes. Pre- diabetes, also known as impaired glucose tolerance, is a term used to describe an earlier state of progressing insulin resistance. It is conventionally diagnosed by having a fasting blood sugar between 1. Pre- diabetes is very easy to turn around. Simply swapping processed foods for real foods lower in sugar and sugar- forming carbohydrates combined with consistent regular movement (not sitting) will quickly put you on the road to reversing this condition. This group of symptoms include high triglycerides, low HDL, higher blood glucose and blood pressure, and increased belly fat. In type 2 diabetes your pancreas is producing some insulin, in fact usually too much, but is unable to recognize the insulin and use it properly. When you have inadequate insulin signaling, sugar cannot get into your cells and instead builds up in your blood. Hence the elevated blood sugar levels. But compelling research shows sugar, and fructose in particular, is the true culprit. As Taubes points out, what is meant when he (and others) say that sugar is “toxic” is that it is not an actual poison but contributes to metabolic syndrome, which in turn can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and a number of other chronic diseases. So taken in large doses over long periods of time it will clearly result in health damage. The Sugar- Metabolic Syndrome- Cancer Connection. Another disease associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome is cancer. In order to starve the cancer cells, you have to eliminate its primary food source, i. Otto Warburg received a Nobel Prize back in 1. He clearly demonstrated that cancer cells require sugar to thrive. More recent research. When your body burns sugar for its primary fuel, far larger levels of reactive oxygen species are created, which generate secondary free radicals that cause mitochondrial and nuclear DNA damage, along with cell membrane and protein impairment. Cancer is but one potential outcome of this kind of DNA damage. Personally I strive for six hours of fasting before bedtime. Along With Obesity and Diabetes, Cancer Rates Have Soared. Like diabetes, cancer used to be a rare disease — especially among native populations. The primary difference between North American immigrants and indigenous peoples in the late 1. Westerners sugar was becoming more widely available. Taubes includes a number of interesting graphs and charts detailing these synchronous events. Prior to 1. 96. 7, the number of Inuit women diagnosed with breast cancer was zero. Today, 1 in 8 American women will develop breast cancer, and people who move to the U. S. As pointed out by Taubes in the above video, epidemiological research suggests that as much as 8. So what is it about our diet that drives these disease statistics? The weight of the evidence points to sugar. A ketogenic diet, or more accurately called a high fat burning diet, which is high in healthy fat and very low in sugar, has been shown to help eliminate cancer in many cases, and a lot of very exciting research is being done in this area. Part of its success is due to the fact that it effectively addresses the underlying insulin resistance. Once your insulin resistance resolves, a ketogenic diet is typically not required to maintain good health. Tips for Reducing Your Added Sugar Intake. One of the most important ways to dramatically cut down on your sugar and fructose consumption is to simply eat real food, as most of the added sugar you end up with comes from processed fare: not from adding a teaspoon of sugar to your tea or coffee. Other ways to cut down on the sugar in your diet includes: Rapidly working towards eliminating sugar you personally add to your food and drink or consume in the form of processed foods. Using Stevia or Lo- Han instead of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. You can learn more about the best and worst of sugar substitutes in my previous article, Sugar Substitutes — What’s Safe and What’s Not. Using fresh fruit in lieu of canned fruit or sugar for meals or recipes calling for a bit of sweetness. Using spices instead of sugar to add flavor to your meal. Reducing Sugar May Be the Best Form of Health Insurance. Research coming out of some of America’s most respected institutions now confirms that sugar is a primary dietary factor driving chronic disease development. So far, scientific studies have linked excessive fructose consumption to about dozens of different diseases and health problems,8 including heart disease and cancer. In my view, the single most important driver of obesity and chronic disease is consuming over 5. Once you get net carbs well below 5. Many grocery stores now stock a fair amount of organic foods. The following organizations can also help you locate healthy farm- fresh fare. Here you can also find information about local farmers markets, as well as local stores and restaurants that sell grass- fed products. Price Foundation.
