This can help improve your posture and increase your calorie burn during your workout. Take The Stairs Every Time You Have A Choice – If you have a choice, challenge yourself to take the stairs instead of an escalator or an elevator. Find Your Active Passion – Find an active hobby that you enjoy. Try A Group Fitness Class – Are you competitive? Do you work out harder when other people are around? Group fitness classes are a great way to get motivated, challenge yourself, and meet active people. Try An Outdoor Activity – There are a ton of benefits that come when you take your workout outdoors – stress reduction, improved mood, increased self- esteem, and greater exercise adherence. If you live near water, try kayaking, stand- up paddleboard, surfing, or rowing. In mountainous areas, try bouldering, rock climbing, or hiking. Take At Least 1 Day of Rest Per Week – It’s during rest that you get stronger from your workouts. By “rest day” we don’t mean sitting down in front of the TV all day. Instead, think of it as active recovery and make sure to move in some way, such as walking, swimming, stretching, or foam rolling. Exercise During Commercial Breaks – When you watch TV, turn commercial breaks into exercise challenges. These short 9. 0- second workout bouts can actually do some good for your workout goals. See how many push- ups, squats, jumping jacks, or jump ropes you can do, or how long you can hold a front plank. Do Yard Work Or Housework – This is about increasing your NEAT (non- exercise activity thermogenesis), which is a fancy way of describing any activity other than sleeping, eating, and working out. Mow the lawn, pull weeds, plant in your garden, mop or vacuum the floor, clean the kitchen, organize your bedroom. Increasing your daily movement could have major benefits for your health and body composition. All the little things add up! Don’t Make Excuses, Just Start Working Out – If you’re tired, don’t think too much about it. Put your headphones on and just start moving. You can keep your workout low- key if you’re tired or stressed, and you can go hard when you’re full of energy. You never regret a workout, but you might regret skipping one. Back To Navigation. Write A Weekly Grocery List – Write down your grocery list before going to the store so you know exactly what you need when you’re walking the aisles, thereby decreasing impulse purchases and helping your weight loss. Another good tip to practice – don’t go to the grocery store hungry. Hungry shoppers are typically more tempted by high- calorie food options. Alternatively, you can opt for a grocery delivery service, which has been associated with healthier grocery shopping, limited food variety, and increased weight loss. Shop The Perimeter Of The Grocery Store – Grocery stores keep all of good stuff on the perimeter. It’s here that you’ll find your fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. The aisles are usually filled with highly- palatable processed foods containing a combination of fat, salt, sugar, and a ton of calories. Only venture into these sections when you have your grocery list in hand so you’ll know exactly what you need. Purge Your Cupboards – Throw out all of the processed, sugar- filled junk food so you aren’t tempted by it, especially these 7 most addictive unhealthy foods. If it’s not convenient, you’re much less likely to eat it.

Diet for Dogs with Canine Liver Disease Following a canine liver disease diet is an important treatment tool for dogs with compromised liver function. A dietary change for a dog with canine liver disease (CLD) helps the liver regenerate while also maintaining good canine nutrition. It is especially prevalent in certain breeds such as West Highland Terriers and Doberman Pinschers. It is one of the top five causes of non- accidental canine deaths. It also produces bile for the digestive process. When the liver is compromised, toxins and waste may build up in the body. This may affect many of the other bodily systems such as the brain and heart. With early detection and treatment, many CLD patients can recover completely. CLD is not a condition that should be treated without medical guidance. Your vet will be able to structure a dietary plan that will help your pet recover. Liver disease usually means that less protein is being processed, so your dog's protein intake will need to be monitored. The general recommendation is to ensure the protein consumed is high quality, but to keep the amount to a moderate level. Some of the protein may come from non- meat sources such as cottage cheese. High quality protein sources contain enough amino acids for your dog and are easily digested. Other recommendations may include offering plant- based proteins, such as soy, rather than meat- based proteins. Less protein will control the symptoms of that condition. Organ meat, especially liver, should be avoided. Other meats high in copper include: Protein sources that are relatively moderate to low in copper are: Turkey Chicken White fish Beef Eggs Cheese Fat and Carbohydrates With CLD, dogs are able to tolerate higher levels of fat in the diet. Your vet may recommend a diet that has up to 5. Cooked oatmeal, white rice and pasta are types of carbohydrates that may be included. Center for Disease Control also does not recognize candida yeast as a health problem so they have never developed a diet. This is why there are so many different yeast diets on the Internet. There are No Fast Solutions. Back to losing weight though. Firstly, do not hope for a quick weight loss solution – there are none. Really, none, zero, zilch, nada. Nothing that you can do will make you lose a significant amount of weight in a very short time. If there was such a solution by January 1. New Year Resolutions to lose weight already. I hope that this has not disheartened you, I just like to be realistic about these things. Why? The Importance of Being Realistic. Most people fail to lose weight simply because their expectations are too high. If you set realistic goals within realistic time- frames then you will not be disappointed when you fail to lose 5. So what is a realistic goal? Really maintaining a weekly weight loss of anywhere from 1 to 3 pounds is realistic, but, that is not to say that you will lose that much weight every week. On the flip side, you may lose more. The Best Way to Exercise To Lose Fat. There are many different ways to exercise. Many people sell the idea of a particular exercise program and just about every fitness enthusiast is sure that their chosen method of exercising is the best. So, how on earth do you decide what type of exercise to do? Who is telling the truth? Do you do long cardio sessions of running, swimming, cycling or rowing? Do you do interval training with alternating short sprints and slower recovery? Do you lift light weights many times or heavy weights few times? Whichever method you chose someone will tell you it is the best. Well, they are all wrong, because . Here’s why: To lose weight (reduce fat tissue) you need to make sure that each day your body is burning more calories (using more energy) than you are consuming. So if your body requires 2. Calories to maintain its current mass (fat and muscle) and you only consume 1. Calories and burn an addition 2. Calories with exercise, you are running a calorie deficit of 5. Calories. Do this every day and you will lose about 1 pound of fat each week, all things being equal. A word of caution: We are all different and this is just a guideline. It is impossible to provide an exact answer to the all too often asked question “how long will it take me to lose 1. There are too many variables at play. So, any form of exercise will help you to lose weight. The real question is, what is the best type of exercise for you? On our article about jogging and running one of our readers asked whether slow jogging was as effective as faster running. This was the answer I gave: “If you run at 1. You burn the same if you walk at 3 mph (approx. So running burns fat 4 times faster than walking – but you may not actually be able to maintain that pace for 1. A compromise will probably be better, such as jogging for 3. If you jog at 5. 5 mph (approx. So. Most people are able to walk for an hour, few are able to run fast for 1. So which is “the best exercise” in this case? Walking of course, as the goal is to create a calorie deficit. The same rule can be applied to resistance exercise. However, one problem with using just resistance training to manage your weight is that the key goal in weight training is to gain muscle and to build muscle you need to eat more. Your muscles need glycogen to work (the liver converts dietary sugar into glycogen) and your muscles need amino- acids from proteins to grow stronger. If your goal is to lose fat, a plan that involves eating more is not always the best idea, especially if you are overweight because you love eating! However, weight training does still burn additional calories so if you make sure that you workout without taking in addition calories (you may wish to increase protein and reduce low quality carbs) then you can create a calorie deficit. The Science Behind these Claims. OK, you really should not just believe everything you read without questioning it first! How can you be sure that my suggestion that the type of exercise does not matter is correct? What about all those bodyweight plans, weight training plan, workout routines etc. The before and after photos always show great results – they must be the best? Well, many do work, but only because the individuals work hard to get results.“Significant weight loss and improved cardiorespiratory fitness were achieved through the combination of exercise and diet during 1. Jakicic et al, 2. In 2. 00. 1 a group of medical and sports scientists carried out a 1 year study into women and weight loss. BMI of 3. 2. 6) and previously sedentary women (never did any exercise) completed the study. The women were split into two broad groups and one group performed vigorous intensity/high duration exercise and the other group performed moderate intensity/high duration exercise. So this is comparing short and intensive workouts with those “long boring cardio” sessions that so many people are convinced do not aid weight loss. The result of the trail showed that the women doing the short and intensive exercise lost on average 8. Kg and the women doing the longer workouts lost on average 8. Kg. As far as the researchers were concerned there was no significant difference between the two. The Diet While Exercising. As a part of the study all women followed a strict diet of 1. Calories per day and ensured that dietary fat was 2. The women in the study had an average age of 3. Calories. Why this Research Is Important. What makes this research really important is the fact that the 1. Kg (1. 9 pounds). This means that if you are an overweight woman and you start exercising today you can expect to lose 1. This is again proof that a healthy diet (healthy being defined as balanced and portion controlled) combined with regular exercise will lead to weight loss in obese individuals. It is really not possible to fail to lose weight if you exercise and eat healthily. All you need to do is stick to the plan. What about Prof. Tabata? I have talked about Tabata training and short intensive cardio workouts before. In Scientists Prove Short Intensive Cardio Better Than Endurance To Lose Weight and Get Fit I discussed research that showed how intensive exercise helped people to get fit and lose weight quicker and in Met. Con – The Way To Get Fitter Faster I talked about the Tabata method. However, it is my belief that these studies do provide evidence that short and intensive exercise can improve peak performance in athletes and can help people to lose fat quicker, but, for those that are not in excellent physical shape these systems do not apply. As I mentioned in the example above, the average unfit person can walk for 6. Also, people start too fast and intensive with exercise tend to burn out too quick, the failure rate is higher. Often people take this approach because they are desperate for faster results and when they do not get the results they want the combination of burnout and disillusionment makes them just give up. Average Calorie Expenditure For Different Activities. One question people often ask when choosing a new activity to help lose some weight is, “how many calories will it burn?” There is often a misconception regarding how much energy is used in different activities. For example, many people disregard walking as a form of exercise as it does not burn many calories, but when you consider that you could walk for a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon, which would expend up to 6. Calories, which is the equivalent of 1 hour on the cross trainer, or an hour of step aerobics , the benefits of a simple exercise like walking become suddenly apparent. Most people, even those who have not exercised for a long time, can walk for a couple of hours if they want. However, most unfit people will struggle to jog for more than 1. Walking wins! Skipping and running obviously use the most energy in this group, but very few people are able to sustain either exercise for a couple of hours. If you are very fit you can run for one hour but skipping is generally done at a few minutes at a time as it is such an intensive form of exercise. The table below lists more activities and the average Calories used per hour for each. Obviously this is just a guideline as different people will require more energy for different activities, depending on the size of the person, muscle mass etc. But it is a useful comparative tool. On the list we have including a few “non activities” such as eating, sleeping and sitting just to highlight that our bodies are burning calories all the time, this being the basal metabolic rate. For example, sitting is 8. Calories per hour which works out 2. Calories per day. Metabolism also varies depending on muscle mass, so the more muscle you have the more calories you burn off all the time. This table can help you to calculate calories burned during exercise. Type of exercise. Kilocalories used per hour. Aerobics – e. g. This can be following a regular walking plan or daily running. It is really best to mix things up though, do something different every day to work your heart and all your muscles. Most importantly, find activities that you enjoy so that exercise becomes a pleasure and a part of your life rather than a chore. In fact, if you are unsure of what to do, follow our weekly exercise plan. Feel free to modify to suit your needs and abilities and ask questions if in doubt. Printable Low Cholesterol Diets . Excessive amounts in the bloodstream, however, can create a cluster of corporal danger. High cholesterol has been linked to a number of potentially lethal conditions, including stroke, cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis, the buildup of arterial plaques. However, an individual may reduce his blood cholesterol level by replacing the fatty foods in his diet with low- cholesterol alternatives. There are a number of diet plans available to print, online, that can help you to control cholesterol levels in your body. This plan, available via the University of Massachusetts Medical School's website, reduces the amount of cholesterol in your diet by replacing foods that are high in fat with leaner alternatives. For instance, try eating low fat cheeses or those made from soy products instead of whole- milk varieties. Frozen yogurt has the taste of ice cream, with a fraction of the fat. Replace vegetable oils with those extracted from olives, soybeans or peanuts. Your dietary fiber should be derived from whole grains, such as breads made from unrefined flour. This diet, as detailed at Diet. Eating fruit is encouraged as most varieties are easy to manage, practical for snacking and contain little to no fat. Beans are also light on cholesterol, but high in vitamins and protein. Eat egg substitutes and products that have the yolks removed. Each egg yolk contains about 2. The University of Rochester Medical Center publishes this diet through its Strong Health website. The diet reduces your cholesterol intake by removing much of the fat from everyday foods. For instance, cooling soups and stews in the refrigerator allows you to skim off much of the fat, once it hardens and rises to the top. When choosing meat, opt for leaner parts of the animal. You can then cook it in a raised, metal pan. The fat that melts off during preparation will drizzle out of the meat and into the subordinate dish. Many colon cleanse practitioners lose weight because they clear waste products from their intestines. During a colon cleanse, you may have. Learn about the colonoscopy procedure, preparation, post procedure, side effects, and risk information. Reasons for colonoscopy (investigation of rectal bleeding. Using enemas or colonic irrigation. Doing a colon cleanse for weight loss sure seems like a quick way to get rid of a couple of pounds, but are the risks/dangers involved really worth it? Are Enemas Best for Colon Cleansing? An enema is an infusion of liquid into the rectum for the purpose of inducing a bowel movement or for therapeutic cleansing of the colon. A low- fiber diet containing fatty and refined foods can contribute to the need for an enema. Enemas are also used in medical situations where a barium sulfate solution is placed in the rectum so that contrast x- rays can help to diagnose conditions or illnesses. Enemas have been in use for thousands of years, with much progress since their early use. Most often, the enema solution is warm water, but sometimes the solution can contain substances such as wheat grass juice, coffee, apple cider vinegar, probiotics, or herbal extracts. How do enemas work? In the usual application of an enema, an elevated bag or warm water is hung with a tube to insert into the anus. The water slowly flows into the rectum, where it is retained for a few minutes, and then expelled. When the water is evacuated from the bowels, fecal material, mucous, and toxins are also expelled. A colonic irrigation is similar to an enema, but is conducted by a health professional and contains two tubes: one to introduce the liquid into the rectum, and another, called the evacuation tube, that immediately removes the liquid and accumulated substances. How safe are enemas for colon cleansing? When proper precautions are exercised, enemas are quite safe for colon cleansing. There are a number of guidelines to follow: Use only clean, properly sterilized enema equipment. Do not share enema supplies with anyone else. Find a comfortable location where you can lie comfortably, but also near the toilet for latter evacuation of your bowels. Make sure the water or solution is at a comfortable temperature; between 9. Do not hang the enema bag too high above your body, as the flow of water may be too strong. Introduce water slowly, stopping if cramping occurs. Wait till cramps have subsided before continuing. If you use abdominal massage to help the liquid flow into the colon, use only gentle force. Proceed with caution if using enema solutions with herbs or other substances. Do not administer any more than three enemas in a single session. Too many enemas in a single session can overtax the colon. With any enema or colonic irrigation procedure, there is always a slight risk of perforating the colon. It is a wise idea to seek the advice of a medical doctor before beginning either procedure. Enemas vs. In addition, the natural ingredients found in the top colon cleansers can help to eliminate more built- up toxins than can enemas or colonic irrigation. Best way to colon cleanse. For the safest and most effective method to ensure colon is cleansed, we recommend a proven one- step colon cleanse product that contains safe all- natural ingredients. Colon cleansers in this vein ensure that toxins and built- up waste matter are gently flushed away, resulting in increased energy, reduced bloating, and the gentle shedding of excess weight. The body responds to ingredients such as aloe vera, senna, slippery elm, psyllium, and white oak by eliminating what can be years of built- up toxins from the colon, unclogging stoppages and promoting healthy intestinal functioning. A high- quality colon cleanser, in conjunction with a healthy diet that includes plenty of pure water, can be the best way to long- term colon health. Take the FIRST step to cleaning your colon. Cleansing your colon starts with eating a high- fiber diet and drinking plenty of water. This helps keep you regular and puts your body back on track. But your body can't do it all. When you're ready to cleanse your body of toxins and undigested food, then you're ready to take the next step in colon cleansing. Keep in mind that colon cleansing isn't for everyone – only for those who want optimal health. Does Your Colon Need Cleaning? Things You Should Know. Cleaning out the colon is sometimes necessary— for example, before a medical procedure, such as a colonoscopy. But some people do it in the belief that the process will rid their colons of excess toxins that have accumulated over time from the foods they eat, the air they breathe, the water they drink and the lifestyles they lead. Colon- cleansing enthusiasts believe that periodically cleaning from the inside out removes waste stuck to the colon walls. This waste buildup also supposedly produces toxins that enter the blood and may be slowly poisoning people, contributing to a variety of symptoms — fatigue, bloating, irritated skin and weight gain — and health problems, from depression and allergies to arthritis and cancer. One method involves taking bowel- clearing laxatives, powders or supplements; using enemas; or drinking herbal teas topurportedly release colon waste and discharge toxins. But using this method might feel more like frequently running to the bathroom with diarrhea. This procedure can cost about $8. In fact, colon cleansing that is done to help remove toxins is an unnecessary and potentially dangerous practice, especially colon hydrotherapy. Jacqueline Wolf, a gastroenterologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and the author of . She said she usually doesn't recommend colon hydrotherapy, but has suggested it for a few people to use as colonoscopy preparation when traditional methods have failed. She's also recommended it for patients who had severe constipation, before there were strong drugs that could help remedy this problem. Colon cleansing can cause side effects. Most of the known side effects come from case reports described in the medical literature and not from research studies, of which there are few. Shifting levels of sodium might cause lightheadedness, and low potassium levels may cause leg cramps or abnormal heart rhythms, Wolf said. More- severe complications may include perforating the bowel, serious infections, electrolyte imbalances, kidney problems and heart failure. There's little scientific evidence that colon cleansing actually removes toxins from the body or improves health. Cleansing is not an effective strategy for weight loss. Although it could be motivating to see results on the scale for a few days, cleansing is not a long- term solution to a weight problem, Wolf said. Colon cleansing and colonic irrigation are not safe for everyone. She said she would also tell people with gastrointestinal problems, such as Crohn's disease (a condition involving inflammation in the GI tract), ulcerative colitis (which involves inflammation in the large intestine), and recurrent diverticulitis (in which a person develops inflamed pouches in the wall of the colon) to avoid colonics. Cleansing's effect on gut bacteria is unknown. Some of the good colon bacteria play a role inkeeping bad bacteria at bay. Originally published on Live Science. High Carb, Low Fat Foods. Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram and are a macronutrient. When they are consumed, they get converted to glucose and they are either used for energy immediately or stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles, and used for energy at a later date. Foods that are high in carbs and low in fat are natural sources. Fruits are high in carbs, vitamins, fiber and water content. They also contain little if any fat. Specific examples of the highest carb fruits include apples, pears, raisins, dates, peaches, bananas, grapefruits, grapes, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries, mangoes and pineapples. Vegetables are similar to fruits in the fact they they are low in fat and high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and water content. The place they differ is the carb content. Only a select few vegetables are high in carbs and they include acorn and winter squash, sweet potatoes, yams and regular potatoes. Legumes are seeds that are contained inside a pod. These are high in fiber, carbs and vitamins and they are low in fat. Examples include peas, lentils, garbanzo beans, black- eyed peas, soy beans, kidney beans and lima beans. Getting Started. See Diets for Management of Chronic Renal Disease in Dogs for some quick and easy recipes to help you get started. These recipes are low in protein (a little below the minimum of 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight daily), and the amount of phosphorus is suitable for dogs with late- stage kidney disease (dogs with early- stage kidney disease can have more). The recipes rely on the addition of a “multiple vitamin mineral tablet” to supply nutrients (make sure it doesn’t have much phosphorus). Some recipes use chicken breast plus chicken fat, but it’s easier to just feed dark meat chicken with skin (amounts fed must be increased a little in that case). Kidney diseases in dogs, juvenile, familial, and chronic; symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and management, genetics and research. List of breeds which have genetic. I have a cat with kidney disease and I have heard that reducing phosphorus intake is important for cats with kidney problems. Is it safe to feed a cat with chronic. Be sure to add calcium as stated in the recipes. It's also best to add fish oil, which helps dogs with kidney disease. See Supplements Recommended for Dogs with Kidney Disease for more information. When you have kidney disease, your kidneys are no longer working as well as they need to. Changing your diet can help protect your kidneys. It can also help you. Warning: The recipes on the website above are taken from Dr. Strombeck's book, Home- Prepared Diets For Dogs and Cats. An updated version of this book by Patricia Schenck is available, but it contains a terrible error: it says to use baking soda to provide calcium. Baking soda is not the same as calcium carbonate! If you use the recipes in the new book, be certain to use calcium carbonate, not baking soda. As a general guideline for dog with early- stage kidney disease, who does not have protein in the urine, you want to feed about half meat and half low phosphorus grains, pasta and veggies, with additional eggs and egg whites, small amounts of liver and kidney, and small amounts of high fat, low phosphorus extras like butter, whole milk yogurt, and heavy whipping cream, as long as your dog has no problems tolerating fat. The percentage of meat should decrease, and the percentage of carbohydrates should increase, for dogs with moderate kidney disease in order to reduce phosphorus levels still further. Dogs with significant amounts of protein in their urine should get less protein (1 gram per pound of body weight daily - - this refers to grams of protein from a nutritional analysis, as shown in the tables below, not grams of meat). Here is a sample diet for a 4. Amounts shown are for about one pound (two cups) of food, plus a couple of extras, which should be about right for an inactive 3. Note that 8 ounces by weight is approximately 1 cup of food, but this will vary depending on how tightly packed the food is. Compare the mg of phosphorus per 1. Hill's k/d (5. 7) and notice that there is very little more phosphorus in this diet while providing much more (and higher quality) protein, which is beneficial for dogs with kidney disease as long as phosphorus is limited. Note that the meats in this diet are raw. If you prefer to cook the meats, the nutritional values will change somewhat based on how it is cooked and whether you preserve the fat. See Nutrition Data for nutritional details about cooked foods. There are additional sample recipes for dogs of various sizes in the K9. Kidney. Diet Files section, but you'll need to join the group in order to access them. Supplements: YOU MUST ADD 1/2 TEASPOON GROUND EGGSHELL (or 1,0. PER POUND OF FOOD FED TO EACH MEAL. This is so the calcium will act as a phosphorus binder, not just to balance out the calcium: phosphorus ratio. Do not add calcium if it is elevated in your dog's blood work (ask your vet about using other calcium binders instead). If you do not want to use ground eggshell, you can use other forms of calcium instead (see Phosphate Binders for more information). Never use bone meal as a source of calcium, as it contains high amounts of phosphorus. Fish Oil is another important supplement. You should give fish oil (body oil, not liver oil) that provides up to 3. EPA+DHA combined per pound of your dog's body weight daily. That's the amount found in most 1- gram fish oil gelcaps, though concentrated products have more, and a few brands have less. The omega- 3 fatty acids in fish oil help protect the kidneys and are one of the best things you can do for a dog with kidney problems. Other supplements that may be helpful are Vitamin B- Complex, and small amounts of Vitamins C and E. Don't add Vitamin D (or cod liver oil) beyond minimum amounts to dogs with kidney problems unless directed to by your vet. It is also best to avoid supplementing with large amounts of Vitamin A as well unless in the form of beta carotene. You can also add small amounts of kelp and alfalfa, or something like Berte's Green Blend. These supplements should be used sparingly, as kelp contains sodium and alfalfa can act as a natural diuretic. Using them once or twice a week may be preferable to daily, especially if your dog has moderate to severe kidney disease, or has high blood pressure. Note that a home made diet is naturally low in sodium, unless you add salt or use high sodium prepared foods (including cottage cheese). Another option In place of the above, you could use a supplement called Fresh + Oasis Canine, designed to balance out an all- meat diet. This supplement contains a small amount of phosphorus (3. I'd give a little less than they advise in order to keep the amount of phosphorus you're adding low - - for example, they advise adding 3 scoops for dogs weighing 3. OK using one scoop less for each of those categories (2/3 to 3/4 the amount shown). This supplement contains plenty of calcium; no need to add more, but I would still add fish oil. Feeding Instructions. Adjust the amount of food fed as needed for the size of your dog, remembering that smaller dogs generally need more food per pound, while larger dogs on average need less (for example, a 2. Keep an eye on your dog's weight, and increase or decrease the amounts if you see unwanted weight loss or gain. This diet can be fed cooked or raw (except for the cereal, rice and sweet potatoes, which should be cooked). If you do cook it, light cooking is better than overcooking. You can break the diet down into two or three meals a day (you can also feed just one meal a day, but it is supposed to be easier on the kidneys to feed multiple smaller meals). You can mix the foods together, or feed them separately, depending on what your dog prefers and what is easiest for you. Nutritional Analysis. The diet shown here, for a 4. As fed, this diet contains 9. USDA Nutrient Database). You should feed a minimum of 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight daily (more is fine as long as your dog does not have protein in the urine). This measurement is from a nutritional analysis, as shown in the tables above and below, not grams of meat. Phosphorus restriction varies according to the degree of kidney disease. For early stage, 2. For dogs with elevated phosphorus, or late stage kidney disease (creatinine over about 4. L, or 3. 54 . Return to Top of Page. Ingredient Details. Here is more detail on the individual ingredients, and what was used to compute the numbers above: MEATFor lowest phosphorus, use high fat meats, such as lamb, pork, and high fat hamburger, but it is also good to include some heart in the diet. Dark meat chicken and turkey are higher fat than light meat, and the skin is where most of the fat resides, so include it if possible when you feed chicken and turkey. Tripe can be used in this category, it is lower in phosphorus than most meats. It is OK to use more eggs and egg whites (use a ratio of one or more egg whites to each whole egg) in place of some of the meat. Small amounts of high fat cottage cheese and canned fish (Jack Mackerel, Pink Salmon or Sardines packed in water - - drain and rinse the fish if sodium is a concern) are also OK, but do not use cottage cheese if your dog has high blood pressure. Feeding a variety of foods is better than feeding just the same thing all the time, both for nutritional purposes, and because your dog will be less likely to tire of the diet, but if there are foods your dog won't eat, it's OK to avoid them.
