Challenging negative self- talk : The Facts . Reach. Out. com USA. What is self- talk? It is like we have an internal voice that determines how we perceive every situation. We call this inner voice our “self- talk,” and it includes our conscious thoughts as well as our unconscious assumptions and beliefs. It can also make us behave in a self- defeating way. For instance, thoughts like ”I’m going to fail for sure” might discourage you from working hard when you are preparing for your exams, and you might actually fail as a result. Positive self- talk is challenging the negative or unhelpful aspects of your thinking, and replacing them with more reasonable and helpful thoughts. This is a powerful way to feel better either about yourself or a situation. You may not even try to study because you believe you won’t pass, regardless. However if you believe that you will do well on the test or that studying will help, then you’re much more likely to do well on the test. Don’t doubt yourself, you’re capable of achieving a lot more than you think. You might assume that your thoughts are facts, when in reality they are based on your perceptions. If you are feeling down on yourself for some reason, this can lead to your thoughts being especially harsh. When you feel down, it is likely that you’re hard on yourself, and you might criticize and judge yourself unfairly. The worse you feel, the more negative your self- talk is likely to become. It can be helpful to put a more positive perspective on things. For example, challenge your self- talk by imagining it's a friend in your situation and reframe it based on what you'd say to them. We're often nicer to friends than we are to ourselves! You can practice noticing your own negative self- talk as it happens, and consciously choose to think about the situation in a more realistic and helpful way. You might be surprised to realize how distorted some of your previous thoughts were before. However, whenever you find yourself feeling depressed, angry, anxious or upset, use this as a signal to reflect on your thinking. A good way to test the accuracy of your perceptions is to ask yourself some challenging questions. These questions will help you check out your self- talk and see whether your current interpretation is reasonable. It can also help you discover other ways of thinking about your situation. Recognizing that your current way of thinking might be self- defeating—and prevent you from getting what you want out of life—can sometimes motivate you to look at things from a different perspective. Reality testing. What evidence supports my thinking? Alternative explanations. Are there other ways that I could look at this situation? Perspective. Is this situation as bad as I’m making out to be? Goal- directed thinking. Is thinking this way helping me feel good or achieve my goals? You might have been feeling upset, stressed, angry, sad, depressed, embarrassed or guilty. Try applying some of the above tools. For example. ”I tried on my jeans and I looked so disgusting and ugly and fat” turns to ”I tried on my jeans and they were too small”. Sally said ’hi’ to me and I made a total idiot of myself. It's perfectly ok to be shy”. An ulcer is a small wound that occurs in the stomach (gastric ulcer) or the first portion of the small intestine (duodenal ulcer). Although symptoms of a peptic ulcer may be absent or quite vague, most peptic ulcers are associated with abdominal discomfort noted 4. In the typical case, the pain is described as gnawing, burning, cramp- like or aching or as “heartburn.” Eating or using antacids usually results in great relief. WARNING: Individuals experiencing any symptoms of an ulcer need competent medical care. Ulcer complications such as hemorrhage, perforation and obstruction represent medical emergencies that require immediate hospitalization. Individuals with an ulcer must be monitored by a physician, even if following the natural approaches discussed below. What causes an ulcer? Even though duodenal and gastric ulcers occur at different locations, they appear to be the result of similar mechanisms. Specifically, the development of a duodenal or gastric ulcer is a result of some factor damaging the protective factors which line the stomach and duodenum such as too much gastric acid, the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. A diet that eliminates food allergens has been used with great success in treating and preventing recurrent duodenal or gastric ulcers (see Food Allergy). It is especially important to avoid milk and dairy products. Milk is one of the most common food allergen, and population studies show the higher the milk consumption, the greater the likelihood of duodenal or gastric ulcers. Milk, as well as coffee, significantly increases stomach acid production. Both should be avoided by the individual with duodenal or gastric ulcers. A high- fiber diet is associated with a reduced rate of duodenal or gastric ulcers, as compared with a low- fiber diet, by decreasing prolonged stomach acidity Fiber supplements (e. In addition, raw cabbage juice is well documented as having remarkable success in treating duodenal or gastric ulcers. In one study, 1 liter of fresh raw cabbage juice per day, taken in divided amounts, resulted in total duodenal or gastric ulcers healing in an average of only ten days. The beneficial effect is thought to be due to the amino acid glutamine, which is needed by the cells on the surface of the small intestine to regenerate. Broccoli and Brussels’ sprouts are in the same family as cabbage and regular consumption is helpful in preventing recurrence of duodenal or gastric ulcers as these foods are rich in sulforaphane, a compound that may be effective for helping the body get rid of Helicobacter pylori. This bacteria is responsible for most peptic ulcers and also increases a person’s risk of getting gastric cancer three to six- fold, and is also a causative factor in a wide range of other stomach disorders including gastritis, esophagitis, and acid indigestion. And bananas, particularly plantains, may be of benefit due to their healing properties on the intestinal lining, while garlic, cayenne pepper, turmeric and foods high in vitamin C may also be helpful due to their ability to inhibit the growth of H. Peptides along with specific nutritional, probiotic, and herbal support to heal an irritated intestinal lining. Take two servings daily. DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is a special licorice extract effective in promoting healing of recurrent canker sores. Licorice has historically been regarded as an excellent medicine for peptic ulcer. However, due to the side effects of the licorice compound glycyrrhetinic acid (it causes elevations in blood pressure in some cases), a procedure was developed to remove this compound from licorice and form deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL). Numerous studies over the years have found DGL to be an effective anti- ulcer medication. Peptic ulcer disease is a problem of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by mucosal damage secondary to pepsin and gastric acid secretion. In several head to head comparison studies, DGL has been shown to be more effective than a placebo, standard drugs like Tagamet, Zantac, and antacids in both short- term treatment and maintenance therapy of gastric and duodenal ulcers. The proposed mechanism of DGL is its stimulation and/or acceleration of protective factors which protect against ulcer formation including increasing the number of cells that produce mucin. Take one to two 3. Zinc carnosine exerts significant protection against ulcer formation as well as ulcer healing properties. Clinical studies in humans demonstrate an ability to heal ulcers as well as antagonize the bacteria (Helicobacter pylori) linked to indigestion (dyspepsia), peptic ulcer disease and stomach cancer. The recommended dosage is 7. Ulcers are a common medical condition in horses & foals. It is estimated that almost 50% of foals and 1/3 of adult horses confined in stalls may have mild ulcers. An ulcer is a small wound that occurs in the stomach (gastric ulcer) or the first portion of the small intestine (duodenal ulcer). Antibiotic resistance is contributing to difficulties in the H. Pylori treatment via antibiotics, and some may find that an H. Pylori diet can be useful. Nearly 9. 0 per cent of the patients and doctors involved rated zinc- carnosine “extremely useful” or “useful” – and absolutely no side effects were reported. How do I know if the recommendations are working? Improvements in symptoms characteristic of an ulcer is the best measure of success. In the studies with DGL most subjects reported improvements within the first two weeks of use. Peptic ulcer disease. PEPTIC ULCER DEFINITIONPeptic ulcers are open sores in the upper part of the digestive tract (figure 1) that can cause stomach pain or stomach upset, and that can lead to internal bleeding. There are two types of peptic ulcers. Many people with ulcers (sometimes called “peptic ulcer disease”) need treatment to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. PEPTIC ULCER CAUSESPeptic ulcers form when acid erodes the lining of the digestive tract. This can happen when there is excess acid in the system, or when the protective layer of mucus on the lining is broken down (making it more susceptible to damage). There are two major causes of peptic ulcers, bacterial infection and the use of pain relievers called nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory medications (NSAIDs). NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen (sample brand names: Advil, Motrin), and naproxen (sample brand name: Aleve). H. This is because the bacteria can cause the following, all of which can contribute to peptic ulcer formation. They are commonly used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Many people also take low- dose aspirin daily to prevent heart attack or stroke. NSAIDs can cause changes in the protective mucous layer of the digestive tract, leading to ulcers in some people. The risk of ulcer formation depends on multiple factors, including the NSAID type, dose, and duration of use. Other risk factors — Neither the presence of H. Surgery is usually a last resort. In rare cases, an ulcer might not respond to medication, gastric bleeding is serious enough to pose a danger, or there is. Still, eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and fiber may decrease the risk of ulcers. There is some evidence that psychological factors (such as stress, anxiety, and depression) may contribute to the development of ulcers as well as impaired healing and increased recurrence. PEPTIC ULCER DEFINITION. Peptic ulcers are open sores in the upper part of the digestive tract that can cause stomach pain or stomach upset, and that can lead to.However, this relationship is not fully understood, as there are many other variables involved (eg, the presence or absence of H. Your healthcare provider will review your history and symptoms, and can run tests to determine if you have an ulcer. Upper endoscopy — An upper endoscopy is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube is inserted into the mouth and down the throat. The tube has a light and a tiny camera on the end that projects images from within the digestive tract onto a monitor. A small sample of tissue, called a biopsy, can also be taken to check for abnormal cells, cancer, or an infection with H. This involves drinking a thick substance containing barium while X- rays are taken; the barium allows the digestive tract to be seen more clearly. This procedure is less common than endoscopy for diagnosing ulcers, but may be appropriate for some patients. H. In people who have had a biopsy, the sample can be tested for infection. People who have not had a biopsy can instead have a breath or a stool sample test to check for H. Blood tests are also available, but may be less reliable. PEPTIC ULCER TREATMENTThe exact course of treatment for peptic ulcers depends on the underlying cause. Most ulcers can be healed with medications. Identifying the cause — Your healthcare provider will first try to determine what has caused your ulcer, since some causes (eg, H. Proton pump inhibitors include esomeprazole (sample brand name: Nexium), lansoprazole (sample brand name: Prevacid), and omeprazole (sample brand name: Prilosec) (table 1). This may be a proton pump inhibitor (see above) or a medication called an H2 receptor antagonist. The H2 receptor antagonists include ranitidine (sample brand name: Zantac) and famotidine (sample brand name: Pepcid). You should take your ulcer medication as directed, even if your ulcer doesn’t cause bothersome symptoms. Some people can stop the medication after four to six weeks; others may need to keep taking it for longer if their ulcers are large or at risk of recurring, or if they have had complications due to ulcers in the past (see 'Peptic ulcer complications' below). Stopping NSAIDs — If you are taking any NSAID medications, your provider will probably advise you to stop them, regardless of whether or not they caused your ulcer. He or she may recommend alternative medications to NSAIDs, such as acetaminophen (sample brand name: Tylenol). If it is not possible for you to stop taking NSAIDs, you will likely need to keep taking a proton pump inhibitor medication as well. This is to help protect the lining of the digestive tract and reduce the risk of bleeding (see 'Bleeding' below). Other methods of symptom relief — In addition to taking prescribed medications and avoiding NSAIDs, there are other things you can do to relieve symptoms and help ulcers to heal. The risk of serious complications depends on the cause of the ulcer, the size and location of the ulcer, and the person’s age and health. Bleeding — Bleeding ulcers most often affect older people. Symptoms may include blood in the vomit or in the stool (this can give stools a black, tar- like appearance). People with bleeding ulcers usually need to take a proton pump inhibitor (see 'Peptic ulcer treatment' above). Some people also need IV fluids and blood transfusions in the hospital. Ulcers that are actively bleeding, or are at risk of bleeding again, can be treated during an upper endoscopy (see 'Upper endoscopy' above). Treatment may involve cauterizing the ulcer, applying tiny clips to close off the blood vessels, or injecting a medication called epinephrine. The goal is to stop the bleeding and prevent future bleeding. In rare cases, a person with a bleeding ulcer may need surgery or embolization. This involves identifying the specific blood vessels that are the source of the bleeding, and blocking off the flow of blood through them. Perforation — Perforation is when an ulcer leads to a hole or puncture in the wall of the stomach or duodenum. Symptoms include sudden, severe abdominal pain, a rapid heartbeat, and a low body temperature. Pain may radiate to one or both shoulders, and the abdomen may become rigid. It is important to treat a perforated ulcer as quickly as possible. Treatment usually involves insertion of a nasogastric tube (a tube that goes through the nose into the stomach), IV fluids, and medications; some people also require surgery. Obstruction — Gastric outlet obstruction is a less common complication of peptic ulcers. It refers to an obstruction or blockage of the outlet of the stomach (the part that leads to the small intestine). Vomiting is the most common symptom; other symptoms include feeling full quickly after eating, bloating, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and nausea. Gastric outlet obstruction is treated by inserting a nasogastric tube to remove food and fluid that has been unable to pass from the stomach into the small intestine. Many people also need IV fluids to stay hydrated. If the obstruction is related to an ulcer that was caused by H. This is done by inserting a tiny balloon to dilate (open) the gastric outlet. A biopsy may be performed to rule out other, more serious causes of obstruction, such as stomach cancer. If balloon dilation is not possible (or doesn’t work), surgery may be an option. FOLLOW- UPWhether or not you need follow- up monitoring for your ulcer depends on. If the ulcer was large or led to other problems (such as bleeding or perforation), or if your symptoms persist or recur, your healthcare provider may recommend a repeat endoscopy to make sure the ulcer is healing. Gastric ulcers — Some healthcare providers recommend a follow- up endoscopy for anyone with a gastric ulcer, to confirm that the ulcer has healed and does not contain any cancerous cells. If you had a biopsy when your gastric ulcer was initially diagnosed, and the ulcer has responded well to treatment, you may not need follow- up. Your healthcare provider will decide whether a repeat endoscopy is necessary based on your individual situation. All ulcers caused by H. However, the blood test cannot be used to determine successful clearance of the infection. Instead, a stool or breath test is usually performed about four weeks after the initial course of treatment is completed. This is because some medications (including antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors) can cause a “false negative” test result even if H. Weight loss, in the context of medicine, health, or physical fitness, refers to a reduction of the total body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue or lean mass, namely bone mineral deposits, muscle, tendon, and other connective tissue. Weight loss can either occur unintentionally due to malnourishment or an underlying disease or arise from a conscious effort to improve an actual or perceived overweight or obese state. Intentional weight loss is commonly referred to as slimming. Unintentional. Characteristics. Unintentional weight loss may result from loss of body fats, loss of body fluids, muscle atrophy, or even a combination of these. Disease processes, changes in metabolism, hormonal changes, medications or other treatments, disease- or treatment- related dietary changes, or reduced appetite associated with a disease or treatment can also cause unintentional weight loss. This leads to a condition called anorexia cachexia syndrome (ACS) and additional nutrition or supplementation is unlikely to help. Illness can also cause food aversion. Eating restrictions may also be imposed as part of treatment or investigations. Lack of food can result from: poverty, difficulty in shopping or cooking, and poor quality meals. Impaired digestion & /or absorption. This can result from conditions that affect the digestive system. Altered requirements. Changes to metabolic demands can be caused by illness, surgery and organ dysfunction. Excess nutrient losses. Losses from the gastrointestinal can occur because of symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea, as well as fistulae and stomas. There can also be losses from drains, including nasogastric tubes. About one- third of unintentional weight loss cases are secondary to malignancy. Cancers to suspect in patients with unexplained weight loss include gastrointestinal, prostate, hepatobilary (hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic cancer), ovarian, hematologic or lung malignancies. People with HIV often experience weight loss, and it is associated with poorer outcomes. Some infectious diseases can cause weight loss. Fungal illnesses, endocarditis, many parasitic diseases, AIDS, and some other subacute or occult infections may cause weight loss. Renal disease. Patients who have uremia often have poor or absent appetite, vomiting and nausea. This can cause weight loss. Cardiac disease. Cardiovascular disease, especially congestive heart failure, may cause unexplained weight loss. Connective tissue disease. Neurologic disease, including dementia. Weight loss in individuals who are overweight or obese can reduce health risks. It will then use stored reserves from fat or muscle, gradually leading to weight loss. For athletes seeking to improve performance or to meet required weight classification for participation in a sport, it is not uncommon to seek additional weight loss even if they are already at their ideal body weight. Others may be driven to lose weight to achieve an appearance they consider more attractive. Being underweight is associated with health risks such as difficulty fighting off infection, osteoporosis, decreased muscle strength, trouble regulating body temperature and even increased risk of death. Due to their minimal detrimental effects, these types of diets are most commonly recommended by nutritionists. In addition to restricting calorie intake, a balanced diet also regulates macronutrient consumption. From the total number of allotted daily calories, it is recommended that 5. Some studies suggest that increased consumption of protein can help ease hunger pangs associated with reduced caloric intake by increasing the feeling of satiety. After reaching the desired body weight, the calories consumed per day may be increased gradually, without exceeding 2,0. Combined with increased physical activity, low- calorie diets are thought to be most effective long- term, unlike crash diets, which can achieve short- term results, at best. Physical activity could greatly enhance the efficiency of a diet. The healthiest weight loss regimen, therefore, is one that consists of a balanced diet and moderate physical activity. A 2. 01. 0 study found that dieters who got a full night's sleep lost more than twice as much fat as sleep- deprived dieters. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), healthy individuals seeking to maintain their weight should consume 2,0. MJ) per day. The World Health Organization recommended that people combine a reduction of processed foods high in saturated fats, sugar and salt. Other methods of weight loss include use of drugs and supplements that decrease appetite, block fat absorption, or reduce stomach volume. Bariatric surgery may be indicated in cases of severe obesity. Two common bariatric surgical procedures are gastric bypass and gastric banding. Dietary supplements, though widely used, are not considered a healthy option for weight loss. This brings as a consequence weight reduction. This method is complemented with psychological treatment for anxiety management and with hypnopedia. Research has been conducted into the use of hypnosis as a weight management alternative. Short- term dieting has not been shown to produce either long term weight loss or better health, and may even be counterproductive. These include books, DVDs, CDs, cremes, lotions, pills, rings and earrings, body wraps, body belts and other materials, fitness centers, clinics, personal coaches, weight loss groups, and food products and supplements. Over $1. 6 billion a year was spent on weight- loss supplements. About 7. 0 percent of Americans' dieting attempts are of a self- help nature. National Cancer Institute. Retrieved 3 July 2. We were out of town for ten days recently. I forgot my Ness Enzymes #4 and # 1. By the end of the 1. Only a few days back home taking my enzymes with each meal, and my hair was back to normal. So why do enzymes affect the hair and nails so positively? Systemic enzymes benefit your entire system. But specifically the enzymes I take and recommend help your body break down undigested proteins that circulate in the system. More digested protein means more availability for your hair and nails. These enzymes have actually helped me grow hair back. There was a time when my hair really thinned out. When I discovered these enzymes, my hair started growing back and the hair I had also got thicker and stronger. It broke less often. They also have a powerful influence in increasing blood circulation. They are able to do this by consuming excess fibrin within the body which can cause blood to thicken, causing clots. And they help the liver in the cleansing process which in turn improves blood circulation. Improved blood circulation helps your hair grow by bringing vital nutrients to your hair follicles. If your body does not have enough systemic enzymes you may see a reduction in hair growth or even hair loss but if you supplement your levels, you will start seeing hair growth. And it isn’t just your hair that will benefit. Your whole body will be helped. Enzymes are important for energy production, fighting infections and healing wounds, reducing inflammation, getting nutrients into your cells, removing toxins, breaking down fat, regulating cholesterol, regulating hormones, and slowing the aging process. When you get the urge to eat, distract yourself, chew on gum or drink water. When you do eat, only eat until you are full and then stop- -don't stuff yourself! Studies show that your brain can't tell that you are full until about ten minutes after you really are. If you still feel hungry after a meal, wait ten minutes. If you are still hungry, don't starve yourself. Try having a healthy snack. How do I slim down bulky, muscular thighs? As both a softball and soccer player, you are most likely performing power movements in order to train your legs. These power movements probably involve lifting very heavy loads for a few repetitions while weight training and performing explosive movements, such as pressing off of your pivot leg when sprinting. As a power athlete, you probably have a larger proportion of fast- twitch muscle fibers (Type II) than slow- twitch fibers (Type I), found predominantly in endurance athletes. Most of your muscle type will not change, as the type of muscle fibers do not predominantly change over the course of one's life. Basically, you are born with the primary type of muscle fiber that you will always have; however, a small amount may adapt to changes in your workout regimen. Resistance and endurance training enlarges Type I fibers, while inactivity causes them to atrophy. Review (Updated March 3, 2014): What You Should Know About It Works It Works! Likewise, training may alter Type II fibers, which come in two varieties: hybrid fibers (Type IIa) and glycolitic fibers (Type IIb). Weight training converts Type IIb fibers into larger Type IIa fibers. With disuse, Type IIa fibers revert back to leaner Type IIb fibers. As opposed to performing one to four sets for three to five repetitions at a very heavy weight (8. Below are some leg exercises to include in your training. Leg extensions. Seated and standing calf raises. Another option to lessen the size of your thigh muscles is to introduce distance running into your training regimen, as long as you do not have or are not prone to any joint pain in your legs. This activity can transform the size and structure of your legs. This is because distance runners adapt to this form of endurance training by developing leaner muscular legs (even though the muscle type will predominantly remain the same). You may consider starting with one mile and then build up to five to ten miles during a training session.
This might not only apply to you, but also may be a reason for your athletic success. Although your legs may not look traditionally feminine, it's important to recognize their beauty in performing strong, powerful moves when scoring a goal or running to home. Since it sounds as if you're still active in softball and soccer, you might come to terms with your priority — to stay competitive in these sports, to play at a more leisurely level, or to stop for the time being. Your choice will determine whether, how much, and for how long you can transform the muscle mass in your thighs. If you desire both, and you cannot change what is in your genes, then you may be able to change how you view your powerful, capable body. Nothing can replace healthy eating and regular workouts when you want to lose weight, but these fast-fix diet tips and tricks will help you look your absolute best—ASAP.Wu Yi Tea. There is so much interest in weight loss and Wu Yi Oolong tea that we are going to look at research supporting the connection. Let's start at the beginning. All tea comes from one plant Camellia Sinensis if it doesn't come from that plant it is not tea (herbs come from a variety of plants). Over time, the plant has protected itself from photosynthetic stressors by forming chemical compounds known as polyphenols. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) of the male-to-female (MTF) type is a form of hormone therapy and sex reassignment therapy that is used to change the secondary. Polyphenols, which include flavonoids, have the same beneficial class of compounds, antioxidants, that make fruits and vegetables good for you. The difference in green tea and Wu Yi Oolong tea is processing. All tea is green when picked. Green tea is heated in order to halt the natural enzymatic reaction (oxidation) of the leaf. Once dried, green tea leaves are then rolled intentionally breaking the cell structure. Wu Yi Oolong tea leaves are plucked, kept under carefully controlled conditions and allowed to oxidize. These leaves are not intentionally broken, leaving most of the cell structure intact. These processing differences make each category of tea beneficially different even though they come from the same plant. The two main ways to reduce food related body weight are; increase energy expenditure (EE) and inhibit the absorption of nutrients, including fat and carbohydrates. Caffeine is a stimulant so it is widely accepted that the caffeine in tea increases metabolism, hence increasing EE. So the question becomes, is it only the caffeine or are other compounds in the tea contributing to that increase?
The Research. The Chinese have long believed that Wu Yi Oolong tea is beneficial in reducing and maintaining weight. A Chinese study, in 1. Wu Yi Oolong tea for six weeks resulted in a reduction of body weight. This study, along with the question of other compounds contributing to tea's weight loss benefits, spurred further research. In 2. 00. 1, Physiologist Dr. William Rumpler, of the US Agriculture Research Services' Diet and Human Laboratory, investigated the ancient Chinese belief that Wu Yi Oolong tea is effective in controlling body weight. The study measured how tea influences energy expenditure (EE) and included 1. The beverage formulas consisted of; 1) full strength Wu Yi Oolong tea, 2) caffeinated water with caffeine equal to full strength Wu Yi Oolong tea, 3) half strength Wu Yi Oolong tea and 4) non caffeinated water. The participants 2. EE was measured and resulted in; - EE levels of about 3% higher when they drank either the full strength Wu Yi Oolong tea or the caffeinated water versus the non caffeinated water.- Participants burned an average of 6. Wu Yi Oolong tea.- Participants increased fat oxidation (fat burning) by a whooping 1. Wu Yi Oolong tea versus the caffeinated water.- This data confirms that a component other than caffeine is responsible for promoting the preferential use of fat as an energy source. The increase in fat oxidation in this study is amazing! Drinking Wu Yi Oolong tea can actually tell your body to burn fat for energy! Scientists then speculated that caffeine combined with EGCGs worked together to increase fat oxidation. A Japanese study, conducted in 2. Wu Yi Oolong tea and green tea on weight reduction. Eleven healthy young female students participated in this well controlled study. Participants received three different beverage formulas; 1) Wu Yi Oolong tea, 2) powdered green tea leaves and 3) water. Both teas were prepared with boiling water. The Wu Yi Oolong tea steeped for five minutes and the powdered green tea leaves were dissolved. After measurements were taken, the results determined; - Wu Yi Oolong tea had higher EE levels from beginning to end and at intervals of 3. EE levels peaked at 9. Wu Yi Oolong and green tea and remained at their respective levels until 1. These results indicate that after consuming Wu Yi Oolong tea you will expend more energy then if you were to drink green tea or water and that it can last up to two hours. The concentrations of caffeine, individual catechins and other polyphenols were also measured producing these interesting findings; - The caffeine and EGCG content was much higher in the green tea versus the Wu Yi Oolong tea.- The concentration of polymerized polyphenols was significantly higher in the Wu Yi Oolong tea versus the green tea. These findings show that it's the polymerized polyphenols, highest in Wu Yi Oolong tea, that link tea to burning fat, not just the caffeine or just the combination of caffeine and EGCGs. Furthermore, the rest of the compounds compared in the teas were similar or equal to one another with no marked differences, reinforcing the results. We have shown that Wu Yi Oolong tea significantly increases EE for up to as much as 1. So what about absorption of nutrients? Wu Yi Oolong tea's effect on blocking the absorption of fats and carbohydrates is thought to play a key role in its weight reducing benefits. While more studies need to be done, initial studies indicate that Wu Yi Oolong tea has absorption blocking potential. There are proven methods for losing weight and keeping it off; exercise, getting enough sleep and eating a balanced diet. Foods That Speed Up Your Metabolism. By Cecelia Smith. Tired? In fact, you may be one of the millions of Americans suffering a chronic, undiagnosed health issue. It’s called hypothyroidism: a condition that pumps the brakes on your metabolism because the master gland—your thyroid—isn’t functioning at its prime. What gimmicks have you tried in the past? Today, we’ll reveal how to speed up your. Small Meals and Metabolism. Metabolism is a term used to describe many biochemical processes, particularly those that involve energy production. Your thyroid is an unassuming butterfly- shaped gland in your neck that secretes all- important hormones that control major bodily functions, including how you digest food and use energy. When your thyroid slows down, everything slows down; hence the fatigue and weight gain when it does. Many things can put you at risk for a sluggish thyroid, some of which you cannot control, like family history. Fortunately, you can control how and what you eat.
And new research shows certain foods have proven potential in helping to improve thyroid health and boost the effectiveness of your metabolism master. Here’s seven of them: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath ? That’s because heavy metals, mercury in particular, are chemically similar to iodine — an element the thyroid needs and readily absorbs. When metals like mercury take the place of iodine at binding sites, thyroid hormone production grinds to a halt. The good news is you can naturally detoxify with fruits that are rich in pectin — a gelatin- like fiber that sticks to toxic compounds in the blood and flushes them out of the body through the urine. In fact, citrus pectin increased mercury excretion in the urine by 1. As a weight loss bonus, research shows pectin can limit the amount of fat your cells can absorb. You’ll need about four pieces of whole fruit daily to reap the benefits. Grapefruits, oranges and peaches are all good sources, but since most pectin is found in the fibrous pith and peel, whole apples are one of the best. Your car runs on gasoline, and your thyroid runs on iodine. Insufficient levels of the element inhibit the production of metabolism- regulating thyroid hormones; and since your body doesn’t make it, it’s an essential part of your diet. That’s why, since 1. World Health Organization has supported the iodization of table salt. But because recent health headlines have called for the radical reduction of salt intake, some people don’t get enough. But you can get your daily dose without ODing on salt; there are other dietary sources of iodine, and seaweed is one of the best. Just two tablespoons of brown seaweed, or a few rolls of sushi every week will meet your need. And as you nosh on your nori you’ll be blasting fat: Scientists at Newcastle University recently discovered that a compound in seaweed called alginate can suppress the digestion of fat in the gut. No, it’s not Latina popstar. It’s the all essential “on” switch to proper thyroid function — converting T4 hormone into active T3. The essential mineral also protects the gland from inflammatory byproducts of thyroid hormone production. Many people who have a sluggish thyroid or thyroid diseases exhibit deficiencies in selenium, and studies show supplementation can help. Selenium supplementation of 8. Brazil nut — helped to reduce anti- thyroid antibodies in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (inflammation of the gland that can make it sluggish if left untreated), one study showed. As a weight- loss bonus, the nuts are rich in L- arginine, an amino acid research shows may help blast belly fat. Shuck one for your metabolism. Heck, make it a half dozen. After all, oysters are one of the best dietary sources zinc—a mineral that’s critical, and complementary, to a healthy thyroid. In fact, the body needs enough zinc to activate production of thyroid hormone. And, in turn, we need enough thyroid hormone to absorb zinc. Any way you look at it, deficiencies are likely to result in a sluggish metabolism, and supplementing with the mineral has shown to get weight loss back on track. One study found that obese people who consumed 3. Get shucking! If your thyroid were a man, he’d be a meat- and- potatoes kinda guy. That’s because animal protein is brimming in amino acids, particularly tyrosine—the building block of thyroid hormone, and of dopamine — both of which are necessary for weight management. A lack of tyrosine in the diet may lead to an underactive thyroid, and a deficiency in dopamine is associated with food cravings and weight gain. You can find tyrosine in dairy and leafy greens, but poultry has the added benefit of being naturally low- fat and rich in vitamin B1. Every spoonful of yogurt acts as a protective shield for your thyroid. That’s because yogurt is naturally rich in vitamin D, and not getting enough of the nutrient puts you at a higher risk of obesity and thyroid diseases, research suggests. Over 9. 0 percent of people with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease that’s the most common cause of hypothyroidism, are deficient in D, according to one study published in the International Journal of Health Sciences. Researchers say the sunshine vitamin’s immunity- boosting and anti- inflammatory properties protect the thyroid from damage. In addition to vitamin D, yogurt is also rich in probiotics that research suggests may help balance “good bacteria” in the gut that can be thrown off by thyroid disturbances. There are plenty of fish in the sea, but salmon may be the best one for your metabolism. That’s because most cases of underactive thyroid are due to inflammation of the gland, and salmon boasts significant anti- inflammatory properties thanks to its rich omega- 3 fatty acid content. In fact, one study that looked at the effects of weight loss and seafood consumption showed salmon to be the most effective at reducing inflammation — better than cod, fish oil and a no- fish diet. The fishy fatty acids may also signal thyroid cells in the liver to burn more fat, a recent study published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry suggests. If you always opt for coffee over tea, you could be missing out on a major metabolism boost. In a recent 1. 2- week study, participants who drank 4- 5 cups of green tea daily, then did a 2. The brew contains catechins, a type of antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from fat cells and helps speed the liver’s capacity for turning fat into energy. Tea is such an effective fat burner, we made it the centerpiece of our new book, The 7- Day Flat- Belly Tea Cleanse! Test panelists lost up to 4 inches from their waists! Our bodies need dietary fat—particularly healthy oils—in order to lose weight and function properly. The right kinds of fats and oils help quash hunger, maximize your metabolism, and speed nutrients through your body. Healthy monounsaturated fats like olive oil can actually help the body to burn calories. Extra virgin olive oil may also increase blood levels of serotonin, a hormone associated with satiety. Plus, olive oil is also loaded with polyphenols, antioxidants that help battle many diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis and brain deterioration. Although it’s true that egg whites are low in calories, fat free and contain most of the protein found in an egg, eating the entire egg is beneficial to your metabolism. The yolk contains many metabolism- stoking nutrients, including fat- soluble vitamins, essential fatty acids and — most significantly — choline, a powerful compound that attacks the gene mechanism that triggers your body to store fat around your liver. Worried about cholesterol? New studies have found that moderate consumption of two whole eggs per day has no negative effect of a person’s lipid (fat) profile and may actually improve it. Studies conducted at The Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee suggest that consuming calcium — which milk has plenty of — may help your body metabolize fat more efficiently. Other studies have shown that increased calcium intake from dairy products (though not from supplemental calcium carbonate) caused study participants to poop out more fat as opposed to it sticking around on the body. See more of our picks for the 2. Best Full- Fat Foods for Weight Loss! It takes the body extra effort to break down whole grains than more refined and processed grains, like the flour ordinarily used to make bread and pasta. Your go- tos are whole foods that are also rich in fiber. We’re talking brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa, sprouted grain breads and more of the Best Complex Carbs for Weight Loss. Recent studies have shown that garlic supports blood- sugar metabolism and helps control lipid (fat) levels in the blood. Adding garlic to foods that are rich in fats and carbohydrates may keep those substances from doing the damage they’re known to do. What’s more, eating garlic can help boost your immune system, help ward off heart disease, fight inflammation and lower blood pressure—to name a few. In a study by Swiss and German researchers, lucky participants ate about 1. Ultimately, these chocolate nibblers had lower stress- hormone levels and a more regulated metabolism than a control group. Scientists speculate that chemicals in cocoa, such as flavonoids, play a role in regulating metabolism by alleviating stress that can cause your fat- burning engines to go on the fritz. Should you think this is a license to go wild, take heed: We’re talking small amounts of high- quality dark chocolate. Researchers say 1. Iron deficiency affects more than 1 in 5 women in the US. Being deficient in essential minerals can show up in all kinds of ways but an iron deficiency can also be a blow for getting into your skinny jeans with relative ease. See, your body can't work as efficiently to burn calories when it doesn’t have what it needs to work properly. A cup of lentils, it turns out, provides over a third of your daily iron needs.
